Eric Trump Causes Furore Over Air Force One
President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the Boeing 747 donated by Qatar for use as Air Force One will eventually become part of his presidential library after he leaves office. However, recent comments from his son, Eric Trump, suggest a different aircraft may instead be featured at the future library.
During a recent interview, Eric Trump said the older Air Force One with tail number 29000—the aircraft recently replaced by the Qatari jet—is expected to become a centerpiece of the presidential library. He noted that the aircraft has served multiple administrations over the past three decades, including carrying President George W. Bush during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and beginning service during the Reagan administration.
Eric Trump described the aircraft as an important part of American presidential history, saying it has flown millions of miles with U.S. presidents aboard and is expected to be displayed as part of the library’s main complex. He did not mention the newer Boeing 747 provided by Qatar.
The comments have raised new questions about the long-term future of the Qatari aircraft. President Trump has previously stated that the plane would eventually be transferred to his presidential library after his presidency, arguing that he would not continue using it once he left office.
The aircraft was donated to the Pentagon before undergoing modifications for presidential use. Trump has described it as a temporary solution while Boeing completes construction of the next generation of Air Force One aircraft, which are expected to enter service in 2028.
Neither the White House nor the Trump Organization has publicly outlined what will happen to the Qatari aircraft after Trump leaves office. The Air Force has also not commented on any long-term plans for the plane.
Any effort to transfer a retired Air Force One to a presidential library could face logistical and legal hurdles. Historically, former presidential aircraft have remained in government service for years before eventually being transferred to museums or presidential libraries. Decisions regarding retired military aircraft have generally involved the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and other federal agencies.
Some lawmakers have also raised concerns about the future of the Qatari jet. Rep. Joe Courtney has proposed legislation aimed at preventing the aircraft from being transferred to Trump’s presidential library, arguing that the United States has invested significant taxpayer funds into modifying the plane and that it still has substantial operational life remaining.
The Qatari aircraft has drawn criticism from Democrats since it was accepted, with some lawmakers questioning both the ethics of the gift and the costs associated with converting it for presidential use.
The aircraft has also faced scrutiny over security capabilities. Trump traveled to Turkey aboard the new Air Force One earlier this month but returned to the United States on the older presidential aircraft after security officials reportedly recommended the change because of heightened tensions involving Iran.
Despite those concerns, Trump has repeatedly praised the new aircraft, calling it unlike any previous presidential plane. The Boeing 747 is larger than the older Air Force One and features an extensively redesigned interior, while its red, white, and blue exterior marks a noticeable departure from the traditional light blue presidential color scheme.
