Gen Z and Millennials Yet to Decide on 2024 Election Choices

A recent poll indicates that a significant portion of young voters, aged 18 to 34, remains undecided regarding their choice in the 2024 presidential election. The study, conducted by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University, highlights a notable opportunity for presidential candidates to engage this crucial demographic.

According to the survey, which is non-partisan, there is a strong inclination among young voters to participate in the upcoming election. Of those surveyed, 37% expressed a preference for a Democratic candidate, while 25% leaned towards a Republican. Additionally, 7% are considering voting for a candidate from a third party or an independent.

The 2024 election cycle is fast approaching, with the Iowa caucuses, a key event for Republican presidential hopefuls aiming to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden, set to commence on January 15.

This demographic, encompassing the youngest millennials and Gen Z voters, is expected to play a pivotal role in the next election. The CIRCLE study projects that there could be as many as 40 million new Gen Z voters, accounting for a fifth of the total electorate.

The poll also reveals that among young voters who are highly motivated to vote, 51% are leaning towards a Democratic candidate, 30% towards a Republican, while 16% still haven’t made up their minds. This data underscores the potential influence of young voters in shaping the outcome of the next presidential election.
