House Passes New Bill To Help Americans, Trump Happy
The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to approve legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent across the United States, advancing a proposal that has received bipartisan support and backing from President Donald Trump.
The Sunshine Protection Act of 2025 passed the House by a vote of 308-117. While the measure received support from lawmakers in both parties, 22 Republicans and 95 Democrats voted against it. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
Trump has publicly endorsed the legislation, arguing that eliminating the twice-yearly clock changes would save time, reduce costs, and simplify daily life. In a Truth Social post, the president said millions of dollars are spent each year because states, cities, businesses, and individuals must adjust their clocks twice annually. He also called the measure an important priority and said he would work to see it signed into law.
The legislation was introduced by Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), who has long advocated for permanent daylight saving time. Supporters argue that keeping the extra evening daylight year-round could encourage outdoor recreation, support tourism, improve public health, reduce traffic accidents, and help lower crime rates.
The proposal has also attracted support from some Democrats, including Rep. Frank Pallone of New Jersey, the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
A similar bill cleared the Senate unanimously in 2022 but failed to become law after it stalled in the House. This time, however, the proposal could face greater resistance in the Senate. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has raised concerns that permanent daylight saving time would result in much later winter sunrises, leaving many children traveling to school before daylight or forcing school districts to delay start times.
The Senate has not yet announced when it will take up the legislation, but its decision will determine whether the measure reaches President Trump’s desk for his signature.
