Is Liz Cheney A Traitor?
Liz Cheney Contemplating Independent Run, Decision Expected in Coming Months
Former Representative Liz Cheney, previously a Wyoming Republican, is seriously considering a bid for the presidency as an independent candidate. She anticipates making a decision on her potential 2024 campaign within the next few months. In a recent conversation with The Washington Post, Cheney, who once wouldn’t have thought about running outside the two major parties, expressed deep concerns about the state of democracy in the U.S. and abroad. She specifically pointed to the influence of former President Trump on the Republican Party as a significant factor in her contemplation.
Cheney has been a prominent figure, especially in her role as vice chair of the committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Her outspoken criticism of Trump, who is currently a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has been notable. After losing her seat in the House to a candidate endorsed by Trump in 2022, there’s been increasing speculation about Cheney’s potential independent run in the next presidential election.
Her warnings about the risks of Trump securing a second term have been forceful and frequent. She recently cautioned that re-electing Trump could dangerously lead the nation towards autocracy, stating that the next election could be pivotal for democracy itself.
Back in October, Cheney did not dismiss the possibility of her own presidential campaign. In her recent interview, she also mentioned not ruling out support for President Biden, a Democrat, if he becomes the nominee in 2024. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is also in the spotlight for her new book “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” which delves into the January 6 attack and her perspectives on the current state of the Republican Party.
