Kushner Meeting With Dem Leader On Trump’s Behalf Shocks GOP

Johnson Downplays Kushner Meeting With Jeffries as Questions Swirl

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is downplaying a reported private meeting between Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), saying Kushner is not directly involved in the Trump administration’s day-to-day operations. Johnson said Sunday that he was unaware of the purpose of the meeting but suggested Kushner has interests outside the White House.

The New York Times reported that Kushner and Jeffries recently met in New York to discuss possible areas of common ground, including housing, immigration and the cost of living. Kushner has remained involved in several foreign-policy matters as an envoy for Trump, including efforts involving Ukraine, Gaza and Iran.

According to the report, Kushner also encouraged Jeffries to meet with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles. The reported outreach comes as Democrats have a significant opportunity to regain control of the House, with Decision Desk HQ giving the party a 66 percent chance of doing so as of Friday.

Jeffries has remained a frequent critic of Trump and congressional Republicans, particularly on economic issues and the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict. In recent days, he has sharply criticized Medicaid changes included in the GOP-backed legislation, called the Iran conflict “Operation Epic Failure” and accused Republicans of adding to the nation’s growing debt.

Trump and Jeffries have also traded criticism publicly. Trump previously mocked Jeffries in an AI-generated video, but earlier this month described the New York Democrat as a “nice guy” and said he could potentially work with him.

Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) offered a more positive interpretation of the reported meeting, saying lawmakers from both parties communicate regularly and suggesting the administration is attempting to find areas where Republicans and Democrats can reach agreements.

For Johnson, however, the episode appears to raise a different question: How much influence does Kushner actually have inside the Trump White House?
