New York Judge Extends Gag Order to Include Trump’s Lawyers in Financial Fraud Trial
In a recent turn of events in the legal proceedings involving the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, a New York judge has taken a firm stance on maintaining decorum and safeguarding his court personnel. The judge, Arthur Engoron, has expanded the scope of a pre-existing restriction to include the legal team representing Trump, specifically instructing them to refrain from public discourse concerning their private interactions with his aides. This decision comes after certain comments had apparently ignited a wave of threats.
Judge Engoron had previously set limitations on Trump’s ability to speak out about the court’s internal workings, particularly after Trump directed a misleading social media critique at a court clerk, associating her with Senator Chuck Schumer and making false claims about their relationship.
Trump’s disregard for the judge’s directive has not gone unnoticed, accruing substantial fines as a result of his non-compliance. Despite these punitive measures, Trump’s lawyers have openly challenged the judge’s internal communications during the trial, which prompted a stern response from Engoron. In his statement, the judge underscored the expectation of confidentiality in communications with his court staff, who assist him in his judicial responsibilities.
Trump’s legal defense, expressing their discontent, has raised concerns about perceived “co-judging” and the judge’s frequent note-exchanging with his staff during the proceedings. The judge, on the other hand, has cited a barrage of hostile communications as a rationale for the stringent order, emphasizing the need to shield his staff from intimidation and harm.
This strict ruling is set against the backdrop of a significant lawsuit led by the New York Attorney General’s Office. The case in question accuses the Trump Organization of manipulating asset valuations to secure tax benefits and favorable insurance rates, allegations that Trump and his organization deny. Judge Engoron, who is at the helm of this case, asserts his ongoing commitment to work closely with his court team to ensure the trial’s integrity.
