Trump Makes Major Sporting Announcement

President Donald Trump said Friday that he would like to see the United States host a future FIFA World Cup on its own rather than sharing the tournament with neighboring countries.

Speaking during a FIFA World Cup reception at Trump Tower in New York City ahead of the championship match between Argentina and Spain, Trump praised the success of this year’s tournament and told FIFA President Gianni Infantino that the United States should be selected to host the event again. He added that, next time, he would prefer the tournament not be shared with Canada or Mexico.

Trump also joked that FIFA should choose another country for a future tournament to ease some of the criticism and controversy that often surrounds the event.

FIFA has already selected the hosts for the 2030 World Cup, which will be jointly held by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

During his remarks, Trump also revisited his involvement in a controversial decision regarding U.S. national team player Folarin Balogun. The president referenced calling Infantino to recommend that Balogun’s red card suspension be reconsidered following a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The suspension was later overturned, allowing the player to return to competition.

The decision drew criticism from some soccer fans and prompted questions about FIFA’s disciplinary process. Trump, however, described the outcome as a positive development, saying the United States benefited by keeping its full roster available and ultimately winning the match.

The World Cup concludes Sunday with Argentina facing Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Trump is expected to attend the championship match and participate in the postgame trophy presentation for the winning team.
