Trump Says He Is Immune From Prosecution, You Agree?
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) recently dismissed allegations that she went back on her word to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) regarding his removal from the Speaker’s position during a significant vote this week.
In a recent interview with Fox 11 Los Angeles’ “The Issue Is,” host Elex Michaelson inquired about McCarthy’s assertion that Pelosi had assured him of Democratic support against any vote opposing him. Pelosi firmly denied making any such commitment, stating, “I made no such promise to him. The decision was made by our Democratic members.”
She highlighted several issues raised by Democrats that contributed to McCarthy’s removal, including the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Pelosi emphasized, “If there’s no respect for the institution, don’t expect support from us.”
In a groundbreaking move, eight Republicans, spearheaded by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), collaborated with Democrats in a 216-210 vote to remove McCarthy from his leadership role, marking a first in House history.
Earlier this week, McCarthy confirmed he wouldn’t seek the Speaker’s role again. Addressing rumors of his potential departure from Congress, he clarified, “I’m not stepping down. There’s much more I aim to achieve.”
Currently, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) is the acting Speaker pro tempore until a new Speaker is elected. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) are considered the frontrunners for the position.
In a move perceived as retaliation after McCarthy’s removal, McHenry instructed Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) to leave their Capitol “hideaway” offices. Pelosi downplayed the directive, labeling it as “minor.”
