Two U.S. service members killed, several injured Saturday
Two U.S. service members were killed and several others were injured Saturday after Iranian ballistic missiles struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, according to U.S. military officials.
The attack marks the first time American troops have been killed since hostilities resumed two weeks ago and brings the total number of U.S. service members killed during the conflict to 16.
Military officials said at least two Iranian ballistic missiles hit the Jordanian airbase, which is used by U.S. forces and houses American fighter aircraft. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show explosions at the base followed by large plumes of smoke rising from the area.
In a statement posted on X, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said two American service members were killed while U.S. and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. CENTCOM also said one additional service member is currently listed as missing in action.
The military said four U.S. service members were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for treatment. Officials reported that they have since been released, while other personnel treated for minor injuries have returned to duty.
U.S. officials have not released the identities of the service members killed or provided additional details about the missing individual as the situation remains under investigation.
