Will Gavin Newsom Make A Great President Like He Claims?
Manchin Criticizes Senate Altercation: Likens to ‘Third World Country’
Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has expressed his dismay over the recent near-altercation in the Senate, comparing it to scenes from a “Third World country.” Speaking on Fox News, Manchin lamented the heated exchange that unfolded during a Senate hearing, stating, “It looked like a Third World country or a Banana Republic, and that’s not who we are.”
The incident in question involved Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and Sean O’Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The confrontation escalated during the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing, where Mullin challenged O’Brien to a physical fight after O’Brien had labeled him a “clown” and a “fraud” in his posts.
Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter, provocatively invited O’Brien to settle their differences then and there, saying, “Sir, this is a time, this is a place. You want to run your mouth; we can be two consenting adults; we can finish it here.” The situation intensified when Mullin stood up to confront O’Brien, only to be reminded by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the chair of the panel, of his role as a U.S. senator.
This wasn’t the only incident of tension in Congress that day. In the House, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) accused former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) of physical aggression.
Manchin, reflecting on these events, voiced his concern about the impact of such behavior on the global image of the United States, especially given the country’s role as a leading global power. He emphasized the need for the U.S. to exhibit leadership, particularly in the context of its complex foreign relations.
